How to evaluate an AI startup product before booking a demo

Define the customer and task

Write down who would use the product, what task it would replace or improve and how that task works today. A product aimed at a large sales team may not suit a solo creator. Ask for an example using an input similar to yours rather than accepting a broad promise to transform productivity.

Separate product access from announcements

Check whether you can use the product now, whether access requires a waiting list and which features are actually included in the offered plan. Keep a dated link to the official documentation. Funding, awards and a polished launch video do not establish that the product will complete your particular workflow.

Ask for a repeatable demonstration

Prepare a small non-sensitive example and a clear success condition before a call. Ask to see an ordinary case, a difficult case and what happens when the system cannot complete a task. Record human corrections and setup effort alongside output quality. Do not treat a vendor-selected example as your own test result.

Compare the cost of finishing the task

Ask about usage limits, required integrations, human review and export options. A low starting price is not enough to compare two products if one needs substantial manual cleanup. Keep quoted prices and assumptions dated rather than publishing an estimate as a guaranteed price for everyone.
